Chicken Tending: Real-Life Learning Rooted in Nature

At Homegrown Learning, our chicken tending program is so much more than a chore—it’s a dynamic, hands-on learning experience that nurtures responsibility, curiosity, and wonder in young minds. As part of our nature-based education philosophy, students take an active role in caring for our flock while exploring the science behind life itself. From observing the stages of chick development to understanding the reproductive cycle and the role of a broody hen, children experience firsthand what it means to be part of something living and growing.

We incorporate math and critical thinking into this daily rhythm through activities like estimating hatch dates and calculating hatch rates—making real-world applications of classroom concepts both engaging and memorable. Through the presence of roosters, students learn about protection, flock dynamics, and natural behaviors in a safe, supervised setting. It’s an organic way to connect science, math, and emotional intelligence with the rhythms of God's natural world.

But the learning doesn’t stop at the coop. Eggs collected by the children are used in cooking and art projects, reinforcing a sense of stewardship and sustainability. Whether they’re measuring ingredients for a group recipe or using eggshells to create textured art, students gain a deep appreciation for where food comes from and the joy of creating with what we have.
For families seeking a homestead learning environment that values real-life learning, personal responsibility, and deep connection to the earth, Homegrown Learning offers something truly special. Our chicken tending program is a shining example of how we bring learning to life—with heart, hands, and purpose.
