Homegrown Learning Educational Philosophy

"We are here to create the world we want for ourselves, our children, and our community."

Our mixed age program (4-10 years old) focuses on each child individually, scaffolding the learning practices and focusing on the level of knowledge they are at, not the “grade” they are typically assigned to. This provides endless opportunities for children to work and learn from each other. Each child learns differently and we provide a space that allows them to explore their interests, build social and emotional awareness, become comfortable with problem solving, and find joy in everyday learning experiences that are offered and/or discovered.

Our learning lessons and practices are eclectic; we draw from several different theories, meeting the child where they are at emotionally and intellectually. We are inspired by parts of Reggio Emilia, Piaget, Vygotsk, and Maria Montessori’s practices, along with the Science of Reading philosophy. We allow children to investigate and dig deeper, giving them time for repetition while they internalize their learning and simultaneously develop relationships. We are a technology-free environment that allows for more homegrown, holistic, and hands-on learning. Art is woven throughout the day to improve fine motor skills, give expression to thought and the opportunity to learn and master skills in handy work. Establishing a routine and utilizing the classroom as a 3rd learning coach is essential.

Through Collaborative Play, we support our learners in our ever changing and growing environment. We believe with loving guidance, the right amount of stimulation and adult assistance, all children can unfold and develop to their full potential. We teach life skills they will develop and use for the rest of their lives.

This learning community is to provide an environment for families with children that promote universal love, truth, and respect for life. We encourage creativity, individuality, and freedom of ideas and speech. We embrace mistakes to be learned from while encouraging love within ourselves and to others. We build confidence and encourage children to try new things through exploration of interest, ability, and joy. We guide them to honor the present moment by being conscious of our feelings by acceptance, respect, and honor.
